How nature can bring men to their knees

The third week we are on tour we saw a lot of things. First of all we saw how nature can bring grown men to their knees. I have never experienced more pain than going over a hundred kilometers in my smallest gear with my head down and the wind grew more and more with every push in the pedals.

My pain always went away when Andrea greeted me with a smile at the campervan and a sandwich. Kelle and Rene have some kind words that keep me going and Lars and Phillip always give me their patented “You can do it!”, this is the only thing that kept me going through this week.

The weather was sometimes crazy so that after this ?training? in headwind a little to no wind feels like you are going into a descent. Every opportunity that comes our way we take a shower, which can be only every three to four days, but it will get better from now on as we are only short of 500 km away from Melbourne. Plenty of time you might think, but then there is always the wind, and 40-50 km/h headwinds can make a stage of 150 km seem like an eternity in hell.

In my head, I put myself into the campervan at night and think to myself in the evening this will all be over, so crank up some good music and enjoy the sun while it is there. Tomorrow will be a new day is what I think, thank you for making us cry yesterday is what my knees think.

On certain points in the hills the GPS in our N8 phones navigate us safely into the right direction and through beautiful landscapes, passing by endless herds of sheep, angus beef and sometimes even a tiger snakes crosses our path. It is beyond epic, way beyond anything I have ever done before and there are memories that will stick with me to the end. One more week to go and we will have crossed a continent, not too bad for a January….
