Has there ever been a life-changing moment in your life?
The decision to travel and leave the UK for a year (that turned into 4) was a life changing moment for me. That decision made me appreciate my favorite quote!
Why are you interested in documenting rides?
Personally, it's like having a diary of some epic rides you have done and be able to keep a record and memory of that day. It is also really nice to be able to share that with friends and other riders. Other benefits I am interested in are to help & encourage people to commute to work or just use their bikes more. Having the information on say the best and safest way to get from A to B could make all the difference in that decision to ride or take the car.
Who is your favorite cyclist?
Has to be Greg Lemond (although there were many candidates) His time trial in Paris to edge out Laurent Fignon was for me the memorable event I have witnessed in the Tour de France since I have been following it. I admired how he won the event with minimal team support against many alliances against him. I have also had the pleasure to meet Greg at the Tour of China in 1996 and he was friendly and was interested in our Hong Kong Team. After the prologue he checked on how I did and as I did not come last (a real possibility against the pros) we joked around and he awarded me the winner’s flowers just before he headed to the podium! I like a champion who has a sense of humor!
Why do you prefer cycling over other sports activities?
I have tried many, many different sports but always come back to cycling. It gets into your blood – it's a whole lifestyle and has many more dimensions than say running for me. I love the sport and adore the history passion of the events in Europe – the Classics, the Grand Tours all the drama and amazing feats of endurance and skill. The really like the fact that sometimes it's not the fittest rider but you can win as an outsider by using your head and having courage!
Wine or Beer?
This was probably the most difficult question of all. After much deliberation I decided to ask the wife who replied "That's easy!" As I stood there with a surprised look upon my face she replied 'Both". Well, she has a point, whatever fits the occasion I guess.
What is your favorite Quote?
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." — Mark Twain
