How did you start cycling?
I was an ice speed skater first and after a couple of years cycling became part of my off-season preparation. Like most people, I outgrew my puppy love and have had a much more constructive relationship since.
What does the Epic Riders program mean to you?
The Epic Riders program is a way for me to help give a new company in the cycling scene the competitive edge. I love the marketing of this brand and am proud to be part of it.
Who is your favorite cyclist?
It's a not so well known rider, Wolfram Wiese. He was a team mate of mine during my time in a German Continental team and I have great respect for the cyclist he was. Always a positive attitude, always going for the breakaway, always putting himself out there, always making jokes before and after the race. If I was just half the rider he was, I would be happy. The fact that he combined his cycling career with a full time PhD is still mind boggling.
What was your first bike?
It was an aluminum Alan, one of the very first aluminum frames built. It was as stiff as a noodle but it made me feel like flying.
Where would be your preferred place to ride?
The roads around Nara, Japan. Nara was the first permanent capital of Japan and there is no denying: the ancient spirits haven't left these hills and woods. If you want to experience Zen on a bike, seek no further.
What is your current occupation and why do you do it?
I am doing a MSc. in composite engineering. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic is such an intriguing material, I just had to find out how it really works. Yes, I am that much of a geek.
How would you persuade someone to do cycling?
I would take this person on a 3 hour ride. No hammering, no easy ride either. Just make sure you both make it home in one piece and then let the endorphins do their job. It will be an instant addiction.
