Beverly, IL – Brad White soloed to victory and teammate Karl Menzies took 2nd place on Thursday evening, July 18, 2013, at the 11th Annual Beverly Cycling Classic, part of the 2013 Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling State Series. John (Jackie) Simes of Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis captured 3rd place.

Team UnitedHealthcare’s Luke Keough and Carlos Alzate went 1-2 in the field sprint, to finish 5th and 6th in the race, while Simes’ SmartStop teammate, Shane Kline, finished in 7th place, just ahead of another top 10 finisher from UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling, Hilton Clarke, who took 8th place.

After the race, White commented on the result he and his teammates produced on the evening.

“I could see Karl was super strong today and we worked well together,” White said. “He and I were just on the same page, I guess.”

Menzies added, “This was a great night in Chicago. Brad was in a break of three, which I was able to jump across to. Then we went to work to make it stick. Brad was able to attack on the climb the second to last lap and got a good gap which he held to the line for the win."

White echoed Menzies’ sentiments on his ability to jump across to the lead group.

“It was a good sight to see Karl coming across to the group of three that I was in,” White said. “Once he was there, the four of us rode well together, but with two of us in that group of four, we had to attack from a little ways out. I went first and it forced them (rest of the group) to chase but with Karl on their wheel, they didn’t chase too hard.”

Menzies talked about the finish in Beverly.

“I was able to out sprint the other two guys to get us 1st and 2nd place and SmartStop rode well all day to take 3rd place,” he said. “Our boys (Luke Keough and Carlos Alzate) were able to grab first and second in the bunch kick (for 5th and 6th place overall). This was a great way for us to start our Prairie State Cycling Series,” Menzies concluded.

The Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling Series is comprised of seven races with four races (July 18-21) on the 2013 USA Cycling NCC Calendar. Team UnitedHealthcare will be racing in the NCC Calendar events, Thursday, July 18 – Sunday, July 21.
