There were 80 cyclists for the 2010 Ulupalakua Ride which got underway in great conditions, slightly overcast and warm. The stronger riders were all amped up as Tour pros, Christian van der Velde and Ryder Herjsdahl were supposed to be present. At the start, race organizer, Donnie Arnault, announced that the two pro riders have taken a longer route and that they will “catch you out on the course”. The ride is flat for about 3 miles then climbs 1000ft before turning around.
The first climb was very fast, with the group thinning out quickly. I was in the lead pack for a while, and when I realized I was riding above my ability, I thought well if you’re going out, go out with a bang ! I stood up and attacked. The Diablo is so stiff, it shot forward and I was able to break free from the lead group. About a minute later the bomb went off, and I had to eat humble pie as the rest of the group went by.
I joined on the second group, but got dropped once more to round the top of the climb with the third group. The ride then goes back down to Ulupalakua Ranch, and passes through the start area. It proceeds to drop another 1000 ft over the next 20 miles.
It was a beautiful day, no wind … and by 9:30 am, it was starting to get really hot. The race had really splintered by this point, with groups of 3 and 4 riders, lining the roads. There was an aid station at the turn around, which I took full advantage of! Returning to the start area seemed just a formality …. then climbing out of a ravine it happened …. Cramping! I watched the race, and cheered my friends as they went by! I eventually limped home, to enjoy everyone’s story of the ride.
It was at the lunch that Christian and Ryder showed up …. Starving as I was, looking at these guys, they were like stick figures! Anyway, there was a prize giving and chocolate cake for us!! A great ride, and thank you to Donnie Arnault of Maui Cyclery for hosting the event, and to Michelle for the chocolate cake!
